Walking to Fight Alzheimer’s Across States
The Give Back Crew is a long-time participant in the annual Walk To End Alzheimer’s. Our Team gathered twice – once on September 10th for the PA Monroe County walk and once on September 17th for the Twin Cities Walk.
This event raises funds for the Alzheimer’s Association in its fight to find a cure for Alzheimer’s and dementia. With our company-matched donations, the GBC raised over $1,000 for the fight against Alzheimer’s!
Sadly, Alzheimer’s affects more people around the globe than you may realize.
Alzheimer’s and dementia affect over 55 million people worldwide. An estimated 6 million in the U.S. alone live with the disease, with over 11 million individuals providing unpaid care.
Multiple of our Team members are closely related to someone experiencing Alzheimer’s. We show up to this walk each year, not only to support the Alzheimer’s Association and its important work but also to support our Team and their loved ones.
About the Alzheimer’s Association
The Alzheimer’s Association has been around for over 40 years. The organization, founded in 1980, began when a group of family caregivers and individuals saw the devastation of the disease and wanted to do something about it.
With the enormous scale of this disease, it is easy to see the significance of what the Alzheimer’s Association is doing in providing education and care and advancing research and treatment.
Each Flower Represents an Individual
At each walk, the Association provides colorful flower pinwheels for each participant that follow a unique color code. The different colors allow participants to publicize their relation to the disease.
Here are the different colors and what they represent:
- Orange — I support the organization
- Yellow — I am a caretaker for someone with Alzheimer’s
- Purple — I have lost someone to Alzheimer’s
- Blue — I have Alzheimer’s
The Association hopes to one day add a new flower to the mix – a white flower. This white flower will represent individuals cured of Alzheimer’s. Until then, we will continue partnering with the organization as they continue working hard to find a cure.
The Twin Cities – Largest Walk in the USA
The Twin Cities Walk To End Alzheimer’s is the largest walk in the US. More participants gather here each year to walk than at any other walk around the country. We are proud to join our city in the fight against Alzheimer’s!
